I'm currently completely absorbed in the book Just Kids, written by Patti Smith, an autobiography of her youth.

It describes her moving from New Jersey to Brooklyn when she was 18. The book follows her adventures of growing up with Robert Mapplethorpe, with all the challenges they face and tales of the people they meet along the way.

It's so interesting to read about what Brooklyn and Manhatten was like in the 60s and 70s. So much seems to happen in a short amount of time in their lives, and its amazing to read about the connection Patti and Robert have, although ultimately they do not have a relationship together, what both of them were telling each other to do creatively all along, ended up to be the things which gave them their success.

Since reading this book, I've been trying to understand Patti and Robert more by reading the novels and poems which inspired them in these times, I'm started this with reading some poems by Henry James, William Blake, and Jean Genet - a lovely person recently found me a books by Genet, Lady of the Flowers and Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell.

I'm going to be posting more about Patti and Robert so watch this space.

Rapid French

One of my many New Year Resolutions is to become better at speaking French, so I do not have to completely embarrass myself every time I go to Paris.

I bought 'Rapid French" which I am currently listening to on my ipod everywhere.... it is 'rhythmic' learning French to music basically. It's really good!

Since the recent late night screening of the excellent 'Mermaids' with Cher, Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci, my good friend Aureila thinks my new hair cut/general manner resembles Christina Ricci in this film - I agree in reference to this particular clip.

Showstudio Fashion Revolution

On sunday Sarah and I went to the Showstudio exhibition at Somerset House. I have alot of time for Showstudio and this exhibition is well worth a visit.

There was so much there to look at, I ended up spending about 3 hours there and still feel I will go back again before it closes on 20th December. It was so good because, what you can view through the archive of the website, is there in blazing lights and so much clearer to take in, it has a bigger I guess.

For the last 3 weeks, I have been receiving free, yes free, coffee from the Pret a Manger in London Bridge, not the one on the main drag, but the side one near the station. So get down there!

I never used to get coffee everyday, due to the cost factor, but since my treat has become free, I can't get enough of it. However, I'm worried that this luxury is shortly to turn bitter sweet. Surely the free coffee can't last forever....what if the coffee barista starts to work different shifts?

N.B food is not free, I tested it this morning, so the guy clearly has some boundaries. Damm.

Buses

Sometimes there seem to be so many buses in London, and other times they appear to be very sparse. A lot in east London are on diversion. I have been finding recently that the bus that your waiting for is always the last to arrive.

A tad predicable but I think you can gather that from the trailer. However, for a rom-con it's actually pretty good, shot from a fresh angle, with an excellent soundtrack, kind of has a garden state feel. If your in the mood for something light with a twist check it out......

Everytime I watch the above video I smile (they should lose the bird though)- I don't know about you but I always have to stop myself from dancing along the street to my i-pod.........

Predickable style is boring

I love people watching. I was on a train today, and I always subconsciously remember what people are wearing, down to small details like how their cuffs are turned and what kind of buckle they have on their belt. A friend of mine says that whenever I talk about someone and have forgotten their name, i always reference what they were wearing when I met them. Once I was talking about a guy as 'the one wearing pink socks'. I never feel like I'm judging people on what they are wearing, but recording it in my head I guess.

I tend to put people into categories of dressing.....not in a judgemental way, just how people dress and what clothes, style fashion and trends mean to them and how it effects their life. If I was a graphic designer it would be like grouping fonts.

The one category that annoys me the most, are the people that buy into a trend and wear it completely in the style it is mechanized instore. For example, the outfit that is on the mannequin in topshop. This is so boring and unoriginal! If these people care about fashion trends, why don't they mix things up a bit! If I see one more girl in the tired look of a stonewashed dress with a denim jacket/cropped top in THAT shape in topshop, I may shoot myself.

Scott Schuman is pretty cool.

As I was doing my Saturday blog check, (God my life is exciting) I noticed this poignant post from Scott Schuman aka the Sartorialist.

I interviewed Schuman for my dissertation - he is so insightful and recently released a book of a collection of his photographs, writes for style.com and has shot a campaign for DKNY Jeans. Schuman is fast becoming influential within the fashion industry, especially within menswear.

In reference to the actual post, I really hope we do start to see more 'real' woman's bodies (give me a break!) on the pages of magazines and when I go across the pond in a couple of weeks, I shall be seeking out a copy of Septemeber's Glamour!

New Crush: COS

Yes I have a new crush: COS. I was in the Covent Garden store today checking out the new season stock, highlights included: a golden jersey dress cut on the bias with oversized shoulders taping in along the arms and a black waxed gilet with exaggerated shoulders, belted at the waist. The accessories at great too. The colour palette is always so beautiful and seems Marni inspired. Whenever I wear anything from there I feel grown up and chic....or maybe I am just growing up....

Today I bought Katie Grand's LOVE. I am quite intrigued by LOVE, but still undecided on it. The theme of issue 2 is 'Youth' - it slightly reminded me of a edgy British version of Teen Vogue, there were even pictures included, which were originally published in Teen Vogue (Kirsten Stewart, Miley Cyrus)

I LOVED the Sasha Grey/Jeff Burton/Victoria Young editorial, these are some really beautiful pictures which will shortly be put on my bedroom wall. The article was also hugely interesting and shone a new light on the pornography industry. If I had to be a porn star I would definitely like to have the attitude, reasoning (and body) of Sasha Grey
